About Crab Island. Crab Island is a shallow, submerged sandbar in the Choctawhatchee Bay just north of the Destin Bridge. Crab Island used to be an actual island that was created by sand dredging in the East Pass, but over time storms and currents eroded it into what remains today, which is all underwater.
